At Christ Church Academy, the intention of the MFL curriculum is to ignite a love of learning languages. We aim to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world in order to prepare them for a life beyond our school. We hope for pupils to understand the importance of learning a language and the wide variety of skills that they will develop in doing so.

The teaching of languages at Christ Church Academy is not just the teaching of words. It is the teaching and learning of a new culture and its traditions. It is the coming together of communities and we aim to encourage curiosity and deepen our pupils understanding of the wider world. The MFL curriculum balances the explicit teaching of grammar to give pupils the foundation on which to build the language and to help them to broaden their understanding of their own language and preparation for authentic communicative experiences that they may encounter.

The MFL department is made up of two specialist teachers. Lessons are taught in both KS2 and KS3. KS2 have one hour per week, whilst KS3 benefit from 2 hours per week. Pupils are taught in forms and are therefore mixed ability.

Pupils work towards a 5-day trip to France in Year 8 where they are able to put their skills into practice and immerse themselves in the French language and culture.
