At Christ Church Academy, all pupils have art on their timetables twice every fortnight. Alongside this, there are extra-curricular opportunities during lunchtimes and after school, enabling pupils to extend their creative learning.
The Art Department is a vibrant and stimulating area that regularly spills out into the corridors and other areas of the school. All art lessons are taught in a specialist classroom by specialist teaching staff that have high expectations for each and every pupil. The art room contains a kiln, a small library section and a number of iPads. We also have strong community links, which allows us to showcase the pupils’ talents further.
The department’s planning aims to raise the pupils’ awareness of the world around them and promotes transferable life skills such as: creativity, time management, working with others, self-expression and problem solving. The lessons also aim to allow all pupils to realise their own creative potential and to explore this with confidence.

Art Curriculum 2024-25
The projects covered in Key Stage Two are designed to develop pupils’ initial artistic skills and knowledge. Ensuring that they are familiar with the main visual elements early on enhances their learning as they progress through the school.
The projects offered in Key Stage Three allow pupils to be more experimental with their own, personal responses. They use their knowledge and understanding from their Key Stage Two learning to approach tasks with more confidence and skill.

Our Artsmark Journey
There is already a strong emphasis on celebrating the arts at Christ Church Academy. A number of off timetable sessions celebrate the arts, as well as concerts and festivals during the summer. The arts are embedded across the whole curriculum through creative writing, music, drama, design, visual art and other forms, as well as being widely available to the pupils through extra-curricular sessions.
We have been awarded Artsmark Silver and are currently completing an updated application to ensure that the arts continue to be a valued element across our whole school community. We look forward to documenting this journey, including becoming an Arts Award Assessment Centre and offering Arts Award within the school.
‘You are positively increasing the emphasis on arts and culture and engaging with the Arts is having tangible results on pupils, staff and parental engagement. The Arts feature in the school plans and are supported by SLT and governors, specialist and teachers, a cross-curricular approach, and extra-curricular activities. All pupils access a consistent and relevant range of experiences in school and with local arts organisations which leads to showcasing within school and the community’.
