At Christ Church Academy, the teaching of history is driven by a commitment to nurturing curiosity, critical thinking and an inclusive understanding of the past. We believe that history offers our pupils not only the opportunity to engage with key events and figures but also to explore the complexity of human experience across time and place.
Our curriculum is carefully designed to provide a coherent narrative of the past, helping pupils develop a strong sense of chronology and the ability to place historical periods in context. From Year 5 to Year 8, pupils engage with both British and global history, enabling them to draw meaningful connections between the events of the past and the world they live in today.
Throughout their time at CCA, pupils are introduced to key historical concepts such as change, continuity, causation and significance. They are encouraged to think independently, ask thoughtful questions, and evaluate multiple perspectives. Importantly, we strive to ensure that history is inclusive: our curriculum highlights a range of voices and experiences - from Black British history and the civil rights movement to the Kingdom of Benin and the Suffragettes - fostering empathy, tolerance and global awareness.
