Humanities
Humanities at the Academy comprises the subjects of History and Geography. In years 5 and 6 this is taught as Humanities with two lessons per week for each class. A group will spend a term on either History or Geography and then will switch to the other subject in the following term to ensure equal time is spent on each subject throughout the key stage. In years 7 and 8 History and Geography are taught as two separate subjects with an hour allocated to each subject per week.
The subjects are taught in a diverse and varied way. There are the usual essays, letters, diaries, map work and extended writing but these tasks are merged with battle re-enactments, guest speakers, drama, roleplay, court room trials, the making and playing of board games and other such activities to bring the subjects to life and make them enjoyable and accessible for all. The department runs numerous trips and field visits each year visiting Quarry Bank Mill, Tutbury Castle, Warwick Castle and North Wales on our combined residential in Year 7 with the Science department.
Humanities is most certainly alive and kicking here at Christ Church Academy and pupils’ achievement and enjoyment levels within the department are something that we are very proud of. Please take the time to look through our photos and events to see all of this in action.
